Advantages And Disadvantages Of Bay Windows

Posted on: 13 May 2015

Bay windows consist of a flat surface that protrudes slightly from the home. The sides of the flat surface that do not directly border the home are enclosed with windows, essentially creating a nook on which people can sit and be surrounded by windows. There are both advantages and disadvantages to bay windows.

Advantages of Bay Windows

If you choose to install a bay window, it is able to add a great deal of value to your home because it will make it look more aesthetically appealing. Not only will it be able to flood a room with light, but it can also give the impression that the room is larger than it actually is.

A second advantage is that the bay window improves the ventilation of the room. Because the bay window is essentially three windows all located next to each other, if you open all of them, you can significantly improve the amount of air flow in your home.

Finally, bay windows can be used for a number of purposes. If you want to provide a space for your children to read, you can install bookshelves on either side of the window and put a comfortable pad and pillows on the flat surface of the window itself. This will create a comfortable area for children to sit. If you want an extra surface in your kitchen where your bakery will be able to cool more quickly, you can put protective mats on your bay window and use the flat surface as a place to store your freshly baked cupcakes.

Disadvantages of Bay Windows

One main disadvantage of bay windows is that they are hard to cover. You can either put a set of blinds or a cloth that covers the entire window itself, but this will remove the additional room that the window seems to provide, or you can try to cover up each panel of the window individually, which can be expensive. You will likely have to hire a professional to install any hardware in order to avoid damaging the window frame.

Another disadvantage is that, due to the large amount of light that the windows let in, bay windows can increase the heat in your home. This is a problem because it will cost you more to cool your home during the summer.

Finally, bay windows tend to be more expensive than other window options.
